  • Pulling emotional triggers…

I was flipping through a newsletter to which I’m subscribed.

    This month’s issue discusses selling.

That sales are made by pulling emotional triggers… that:

“We Really Don’t Sell PRODUCTS Online Or Offline, We Sell Emotion.”

And it’s about honing in on the emotions to make a sale.

The place to see this in action is through TV and radio… these will give you plenty to model and learn from.

And when you start paying attention to the TV and radio, it’s amazing how true the above statement is.

I was watching the TV last night and a party-political broadcast came on TV for the Labour Party.

And from what I can remember, it was to do with pensioners and how they were being affected by their “cold weather” payments being stopped.

If you’re in the UK, you might have even seen this.

At the time, I honestly wasn’t paying a lot of attention to it, but I do recollect they showed quite a few emotional scenes in the ad.

It’s quite fascinating when you start looking at these sorts of ads and studying them.

A great example to study is the ASPCA commercials.

I Googled these and found a load of the ASPC ads on iSpot.tv.

There are some great examples there to look through.

So, if you want to beef up your ad or email campaigns… Ask yourself:

“What emotional triggers am I leaving on the table?”

Doing this will help you create more compelling content. For use in affiliate marketing, email marketing and more.

    Zaf.

  • 7 Bills that are going up this week in the UK

Can you believe that we’re in April already?

The wife was complaining this morning about the rise in water cost, thinking it’s gone up by around £8 or £9 extra a month.

And the direct debit had just gone out of the bank. Boy, she was fuming…

I came across an article on the BBC News website relating to this…

    With the headline.

‘I can’t shop around for my water supplier, so how can I cut costs?’

The article lists these 7 bills that are going up this week in the UK:

✅ Water bills for households in England and Wales are up by £10 per month on average, but there’s a lot of variation depending on the company, externally. In Scotland, they’re rising by almost 10%

✅ Gas and electricity bills are increasing again – this time by an average of £111 a year to £1,849 – for millions of households

✅ Council tax in England is generally going up by 4.99%, with bills in Wales rising by about 4.5% to 9.5%, and in Scotland by at least 8%

✅ The standard rate of tax for cars registered after April 2017 is rising by £5 to £195 a year. According to the RAC, external,, external you may pay less or more if your car was first used before 2017

✅ Broadband and phone bill rises depend on your provider and contract start date. The cost of a TV licence is also going up by £5 to £174.50

✅ Stamp duty will be paid by house buyers in England and Northern Ireland on properties over £125,000, instead of over £250,000

✅ Hidden tax rises are also inbound. This is due to the freeze on thresholds on income tax and National Insurance.

This is often called a “stealth tax” – in short, pay goes up, but the tax thresholds don’t, meaning you’re more likely to pay a higher rate

I don’t know about you, but there’s a couple from that list I wasn’t even aware of.

With the cost of living rising in the UK and other parts of the world…

…more and more people will be pushed into having to either find a second job or look for ways they can make an extra side income.

I think you’re far better off creating a side income that you can if you want to build a business around.

  • I had a great laugh watching this…

Earlier today, as it was a nice day, I mowed the back garden.

After my lad insisted I watch a film with him on Netflix…

The film is “Spy”, and it’s about a desk-bound CIA analyst named Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy).

Who volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer and prevent a diabolical global disaster…

And I tell you I was laughing throughout this film…

Rick Ford (Jason Statham) in one scene says to Susan Cooper:
“You really think you’re ready for the field?

I once used defibrillators on myself.

I put shards of glass in my fuckin’ eye.

I’ve jumped from a high-rise building using only a raincoat as a parachute and broke both legs upon landing; I still had to pretend I was in a fucking Cirque du Soleil show!

I’ve swallowed enough microchips and shit them back out again to make a computer.

This arm has been ripped off completely and re-attached with this fuckin’ arm.”

If you haven’t watched this or even if you have and you want a good laugh, then I definitely recommend watching this.

Now, why am I telling you this?

    Two reasons:

    1. There’s nothing like watching a good film that makes you laugh.

    2. There’s a good morale in this film.

Susan Cooper was a deskbound CIA agent – she let her fear stop her from even attempting to be in the field.

And a lot of people do this in areas of their lives, too.

Take my wife, for example, last year was the first time ever that we all had a holiday abroad.

Because she was that afraid of going on a plane, even though she’d never been on one.

Though she hated the flight and swore blind at the time she’d never step foot on another plane again, lol.

(But at least she gave it a go, even if she didn’t like it. And she’s now even doing it again this year!)

And that’s the same with this online thing.

The thought of building an email list and sending out emails to that list fills some people with dread.

I know what that’s like, I’ve been there… but you know what?

It might NOT be as bad as you think – sure, the first dozen or so emails you send will stink, but they WILL get better the more you do them.

  • Creating a lead magnet? Do this first.

It’s been a sunny 11 degrees here in Notts today…

Although a wee bit windy, according to the weather app, it felt like 5 degrees.

I was listening to an audio training from Dan Kennedy for a little while when I was reminded of a lesson I learned a few years ago.

The lesson is from direct response marketing.

    And it’s simply this…

Create the marketing for the product before you create the product.

Whether that’s an ad, a sales page or even an opt-in page.

Most people do this backward and create their product first.

Limiting themselves to the product and having no idea if it is what the market wants.

Leaving themselves stuck with a product they can’t sell.

And the same goes for lead magnets.

Once you’ve done the market research and you’ve found out what people in your market want.

And their problems and pain points…

You can then come up with some ideas for a lead magnet that solves that ONE problem.

Create an outline of the lead magnet and list out possible names for the lead magnet.

Along with the benefits and objections, consider what format the lead magnet will be in, and how you’ll create the content for it.

Then figure out how you will be creating your lead magnet.

Will you be using your own knowledge, research, or both, etc.

This will then give you the copy for your offer to put on the opt-in page.

Once you have these, then create the opt-in page and image or eCover for your lead magnet.

When I first created my 17 Rapid Side Hustles lead magnet, I only had an image representing the lead magnet…

  • Is content REALLY 👑 👑👑?

It’s been a lovely sunny day, and 15 degrees here today.

I was doing some cardio training today, something I like to do from Monday to Friday.

During my training, I was listening to part 2 of an audio by Dan Kennedy.

    Dan talks about Marvel…

Saying that everyone’s heard of Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Avengers and Captain America. And that you’d have to be living in a cave not to have.

But did you know that Marvel was almost bankrupt on three separate occasions?

They HARDLY ever made any money… Nope.

And every once in a while, they had a year when they made some money.

They had licensed out all their films for relatively low money because they so desperately needed cash all the time.

    They made no profit…

Even after years and years and years of having a ton of popular intellectual property.

As popular as Spider-Man was then, they couldn’t turn in any cash.

(I can still remember going to the cinema in the 70s when I was a kid to watch Spiderman, I loved that film. Lol.)

Then Disney brought it, being smart marketers, they knew what to do.

They plugged it into their ecosystem and got their entire purchase price back on three films, and the thing is making a fortune.

So, it ain’t the intellectual property!

Nope… It’s intellectual property and what gets done with it.

    And Dan says:
“When you hear the phrase “content is king” this is utterer CRAP.

It’s another way of saying – if you build a better mousetrap, they’ll beat a path to your door.”

And according to Dan, this is a fatally flawed idea.

Content is NOT king, it’s worthless. It’s what you do with that content where the value lies.

  • How to come up with killer lead magnet titles

It’s been a bit of a miserable day here in Notts, weather-wise that is.

Something that’s often overlooked when creating a lead magnet is the actual title.

In the book Magnetic Marketing by Dan Kennedy.

Dan emphasizes the importance of having a powerful title.

“He goes on to say the title of your lead magnet is like a headline, it has to interest people enough to want it, then motivate them to consume it when they get it.”

You need to take the time to create a really powerful title.

Where do you find great titles?

By looking at the covers of magazines or tabloids such as:

    ✅ The Enquirer
    ✅ Cosmopolitan
    ✅ Readers Digest
    ✅ And others

The headlines have to sell those magazines off the rack.

What we’re doing here is looking at the structure of the headlines that we can model.

A simple trick you can do is to search for a magazine and then click on the ‘Images’ tab, which will bring up lots of cover images.

(You could create a swipe file of magazine covers for possible title ideas.)

You can also get some great ideas from Amazon by looking in the book section at both the book and chapter titles.

And finally, you can also try using AI to give you some ideas

It’s a good idea to brainstorm ten titles for your lead magnet and then choose the one you think is best.

  • $263.37 in affiliate commissions

I can remember the day I made my first affiliate commissions.

    It was December 2018.

I was in a completely different niche then.

Would you believe I was in the Law of Attraction niche?

    Lol.

I picked that particular niche as, at the time, it showed to be a profitable niche with a tool I had access to at the time.

I had been building my list with solo ads.

And got a list of around 900 or so subscribers.

I promoted a product from ClickBank, as most newbies tend to do.

That day, I decided to promote a product that had to do with freelancing…

(I read that sometimes you could promote stuff from a different niche, as some people would also have other areas of interest.)

The product was for My Freelance Paycheck. Interestingly, I’ve found someone promoting this on LinkedIn dated February this year.

From what I can remember, I only promoted this for three days. And because it has a monthly subscription, I also got recurring commissions.

(So, not only did I make my first commissions I also got a Brucey bonus in recurring commissions, lol.)

I logged into my ClickBank account and couldn’t believe I made my first commission and that it was for $263.37.

    Talk about blown away.

And from then on, I was hooked.

  • Have you tried affiliate marketing from a mobile?

As I’m writing this email, I can hear the pitter-patter of the rain hitting my bedroom window.

It’s been raining for the past hour or so now.

I came across this interesting question asking…
“Does anyone have experience with affiliate marketing from their phone?”

The person asking this question wasn’t in a position to buy a computer anytime soon. And wanted to know if it’s possible to do affiliate marketing using a mobile.

As of September 2024, people using mobile devices to access the internet accounted for 63.38% of internet traffic.

    (No surprise there.)

And it appears a lot of people are doing affiliate marketing using their mobile devices.

Here’s a breakdown I came across of how to do affiliate marketing from your mobile:

    Choose Your Niche:

Identify a topic or product category that aligns with your interests. And the interests of your potential audience.

    Select Affiliate Programs:

Research and join affiliate programs that offer products or services relevant to your niche.

    Create Engaging Content:

Develop valuable and engaging content (text, images, videos). Promoting the products you’re affiliated with.

    Promote Your Affiliate Links:

Share your affiliate links on social media and messaging apps (like WhatsApp). Or other mobile-friendly platforms.

    Track Your Results:

Check your affiliate links’ performance to see which strategies are working best. And make adjustments as needed.

    Use Mobile-Specific Advertising:

Consider using platforms like Google AdWords for mobile-specific campaigns.

    Join Mobile Affiliate Networks:

Explore networks like Algo Affiliates, which offer access to various affiliate programs.

    Leverage Apps:

Use apps like GOAFFPRO. Which offer features like branded portals for affiliates and automated referral tracking. And mobile apps for engagement.

    Consider App Affiliate Programs:

Explore programs like Amazon Appstore, where you can promote apps and earn commissions.

    Be Aware of the Competition:

Mobile affiliate marketing is competitive. So focus on creating high-quality content and building a strong online presence.

That’s just a shortened outline to give you an idea…

A couple of top mobile app affiliate programs you can choose from include:

    1. Apple App Store
    2. Google Play Store
    3. Groupon
    4. Microsoft 365
    5. Rakuten

I don’t know about you… But I’d struggle to do affiliate marketing from my mobile, even though I have an iPhone Pro Max.

I’d have to keep zooming in all the time, lol.

What about you? What are your thoughts on this?

  • I got myself banned from PayPal

A couple of years back now.

I released my first product, and it sold quite well.

At that time, I was using PayPal to take payments and Stripe through my ThriveCart account.

    And all was dandy…

I was selling my product through affiliates I recruited, and I had about $2,000 in my PayPal account.

(Affiliate commissions for one of the affiliates I had.)

Until I got this email from PayPal, some of which is below:

    Dear Zaf Barnes,

You can no longer do business with PayPal.

A recent review of your account activity has determined that you’re in violation of PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy.

As a result, your account has been permanently limited, and you won’t be able to conduct any further business using PayPal.

This is permitted under the PayPal User Agreement sections Restricted Activities and Restricted Activities Holds, and Other Actions We May Take.

You must remove all references to PayPal from your website(s) and/or auction(s), including removing PayPal as a payment option, the PayPal logo, and PayPal shopping cart.

If you have funds in your PayPal balance, we’ll hold it for up to 180 days. These funds may be used to satisfy any obligations you may have under the User Agreement.

After that period, we’ll email you with information on how to access any remaining funds.

    What the fu*k I thought.

I had $2k sitting in my PayPal account, I couldn’t touch. The money that I needed to pay my affiliate with.

    NOT good at all.

Six Months later, I finally got the money out of the account…

Luckily enough, I’d managed to get hold of the money to pay the affiliate way before then.

Turns out I had an old business PayPal account that I hadn’t used for years for eBay, and it was still active.

I created a PayPal account specifically for my business, NOT realizing that I still had this other PayPal business account.

And NOW I’m banned for life from using PayPal business…

    Oh well…

At the time, I thought I was completely fubared.

But you know what? I was completely wrong.

You DON’T need PayPal to run a business.

So if you ever go to buy one of my products and wonder why I don’t use PayPal, now you know!

  • How I’m dealing with cold subscribers

I woke early this morning around two am with a banging headache.

Feeling rather crap, I took a couple of paracetamols and went back to sleep for a few hours.

When I woke around 6:15 am I still felt like crap with a heavy sensation in my head…

I got my daughter’s bug as she wasn’t well the day before with a bad migraine… I know it’s good to share, but really?

That’s something she could have kept to herself! Lol.

As I was feeling a little better later on, I decided to do a couple of needed tasks.

I’ve been going through my autoresponder today, looking at how to deal with cold subscribers.

Kit refers to cold email subscribers as:

People who haven’t opened or clicked on a link in an email for more than 90 days.

And for subscribers who have been active for fewer than 90 days, anyone who hasn’t opened or clicked an email in the last 30 days.

There are two ways you can do this:

    1. Add a tag for the cold subscribers.

    2. Create a segment for the cold subscribers.

I opted to create a segment and exclude any buyers from that list.

Since the segment is dynamic, any cold subscribers I get will automatically get added to this segment.

Then add them to a 3-day re-engagement automation.

(And test, or I could delete them, like I know ONE email marketer does.)

I’ve not long finished setting up the automation for this and will test it later.

How often should you clean your list?

That depends on how often you email.

If you’re emailing only a couple of times a week, then maybe every 90 days.

For me. I’ve been emailing every day, then every 30 days.

    Reasons To Clean Your List:

    ✅ Increase open rates

    ✅ More engaged subscribers

    ✅ Lower autoresponder bill

✅ Improved deliverability (repeatedly sending to un-engaged subscribers can damage your deliverability)
