Everyone has something that makes them feel uncomfortable…

Such as spiders or elevators but normally we tend to cope with them.

It’s said that the greatest fear is public speaking, but most people can do it if they’re forced to.

However, for some being in a certain situation or around a certain thing can cause so much fear that they go to so many lengths to avoid it all together.

Then it becomes a phobia…

Below are 5 of the most unusual phobias.

1. Eisoptrophobia: Fear of mirrors, thought to come from superstitions or scenes from horror movies.
   
   
2. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: Fear of long words, also known as sesquipedalophobia. (Damn talk about a mouthful, eh?)
   
   
3. Lachanophobia: Fear of vegetables. People with this phobia can experience extreme anxiety when seeing or even thinking about vegetables.
   
   
4.  Globophobia: Fear of balloons. Related to past experiences to the balloons popping or loud popping noises. (Interestingly this one my wife has, from a childhood experience of a dog biting her when the noise of the balloon popped and now, she can’t stand to be near balloons.)
   
   
5. Nomophobia: Fear of being without a phone. Now this is one most people can relate to. Though we wouldn’t experience intense and persistent anxiety. (Saying that when I’ve not been able to find my damn phone, I certainly have, lol.)

Did you spot what words that number 5 is made up of?

Me neither!

No Mo phobia – No Mobile Phobia…

Speeding is the most common traffic offense with around 42 million speeding tickets issued in the US each year.

In Finland, things work a little differently the amount you pay for a speeding ticket depends on how much you earn a year.

In 2023 a 76-year-old Finnish millionaire got slapped $130,000 fine for going over the speed limit of more than 18.6mph.

(Don’t that just make your mind boggle? That’s more than the average person earns in a whole year and more.)

In a zone that was roughly 32mph.

And had his license suspended for 10 days.

Said to be the world’s highest-ever fine…

The Nya Aaland newspaper reported:

“I really regret the matter,” Wiklöf was quoted as saying. “I had just started slowing down, but I guess that didn’t happen fast enough. It’s how it goes.”

That money was probably peanuts for that guy, lol.

In January of this year, there was a series on the BBC (UK TV)…

MR Bates vs The Post Office.

If you live in the UK, you know you may have watched it or seen it on the news.

It was a four-part drama that ran over four consecutive nights.

A semi-fictionalize (according to the BBC) account of the Post Office Horizon Scandal…

And a proper mess that bosses at post offices all over the UK were wrongly accused of stealing and tampering with the book accounts…

For nearly 20 years starting in 1999 over 700 postmasters got into serious trouble, some even facing prosecution.

But get this: it wasn’t anything to do with the managers… nope it was a computer program glitch in the Horizon system screwing things up.

The software made it look like money was disappearing from the post offices when it wasn’t.

And when the accused postmaster tried to explain that the fault was down to their software and not them, they got fired.

With some even having to pay the post office back out of their life’s savings or ending up in prison…

One lady was pregnant when she got thrown behind bars…

And according to the BBC the “most widespread miscarriage of justice in UK history”.

The devastating effects were felt by thousands of innocent people involved and their families, going bankrupt, losing their homes, marriage split-ups mental health and even suicide.

And for the past 25 years, a group of workers have fought to clear their names led by Alan Bates (formerly a postmaster) and by 2020 a few slowly began to get their charges dropped with an inquiry launched in 2021.

Within days of the last series, more than a million people signed a petition demanding that the CEO at the time Paula Venells give back her CBE given to her by Queen Elizabeth II in 2009.

On January 9^th she did, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he would bring in a new law to “Swiftly exonerate and compensate the victims”.

If you haven’t watched this yet and like true-life dramas, you probably enjoy it.

Witches are described as someone who can communicate with supernatural beings and cast spells.

The first recorded mention of witches is in the first book of Samuel in the Bible, dating between 931 and 721 BC.

Various cultures perceived witches differently…

in ancient Egypt witches were well respected in society, it was believed their powers came from God.

They were regularly consulted by citizens for amulets and protection spells.

Also having other valuable skills such as alchemy, reading the stars and creating herbal mixtures.

Some cultures though feared witches such as in medieval Europe…

Witches had a bad reputation and were seen as the work of the Devil.

Witches and their black pointy hat are standard throughout history…

There are many theories to try and explain this but the most common one about witches and brooms is from the Middle Ages.

At that time, it was common for people to use hallucinogens like nightshade, and mandrake in ointments and infusions.

(Bloody hell everyone must have been high as a kite back then, lol.)

It was discovered later that just rubbing themselves on sweaty parts of their body like the armpits and the crotch was enough to get them high.  

(Hahaha, can you imagine!)

Writings started to appear around this time of witches using brooms to consume psychoactive compounds…

and it is thought that witches flying their brooms came about from people who had vivid dreams caused by these compounds.

And the iconic pointy hat?

Again, various theories one being that the style of the hat can be traced to the Ouakers…

a persecuted Christian denomination that rose in 17th-century England.

Interesting and crazy stuff…

Nowadays you wouldn’t think twice about hopping in an elevator instead of taking the stairs…

You’d most likely think twice though if you thought that it could be the last ride of your life.

Almost two centuries ago that was a real possibility…

If the cables had snapped or frayed to the point of breaking, then anyone in the lift would have plummeted to their death.

And most likely did.

That is until Elisha Otis came along…

In 1854 the Otis Elevator company invented and began marketing a device that could stop an elevator from falling to the ground if its rope snapped.

But rather than just telling people about his invention Elisha took it one step further.

By going to the World’s Fair at the Crystal Palace in New York City and rode an elevator from high up in the air.

Ordering the rope to be cut that was holding the elevator. He didn’t fall to his death…

(The guy had some balls pulling that stunt.)

And the crowd loved it, amazed by how the elevator had managed to stay safe high up in the sky without plummeting.

That day marked the change in elevator safety and trust in the technology skyrocketed forever after.

And it wasn’t long before Otis’s design was in nearly every building in New York City and beyond.

Crazy to think that before this people used to risk their lives riding in an elevator.
